What Is an IP Address?

Every device that connects to the internet is assigned a numerical label called an IP address — short for Internet Protocol address. It functions like a postal address for your connection: without it, data you request has nowhere to return. When you visit a website, stream a video or send an email, your IP address is attached to every outgoing request so the server knows where to send the response.

IP addresses are managed globally by regional registries, which allocate large blocks to Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Your ISP then assigns one of those addresses to your connection. That assigned address is your public IP address — the identity your connection presents to the rest of the internet.

Public IP vs. Private IP

Most people are unaware they actually have two distinct IP addresses in use at the same time. Understanding the difference matters for both privacy and network troubleshooting.

Your public IP address is assigned by your ISP and is visible to every website, server and service you connect to online. It is shared across every device on your home or office network — your laptop, phone, smart TV and router all appear to the outside world under this one address.

Your private IP address is assigned by your router and only exists within your local network. Common private ranges are 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16–31.x.x. These are invisible to the public internet. Your router converts between them and your public IP using a process called Network Address Translation (NAT).

IPv4 vs. IPv6: Why Two Formats Exist

You may have noticed IP addresses appear in two very different formats. This is because the internet is in a long transition between two protocol versions, and both are currently active.

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses written as four decimal groups separated by dots — for example, 192.0.2.1. It provides roughly 4.3 billion unique addresses. That figure was enormous when IPv4 was designed in the 1970s, but the global pool was effectively exhausted around 2011 as smartphones, connected devices and worldwide internet access expanded far beyond early projections.

IPv6 addresses this by using 128-bit addresses in eight groups of hexadecimal digits, such as 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334. The available address space is 340 undecillion — enough to assign a unique address to every grain of sand on Earth several times over. Most modern devices and networks now support both simultaneously through dual-stack networking.

What Your IP Address Actually Reveals

This is the question most people really want answered. The truthful answer is: less than many people fear, but more than some assume. Here is exactly what your public IP exposes — and what it does not.

What your IP address does not reveal: your name, home address, phone number, email, browsing history, or the content of anything you have searched or typed. Obtaining that information requires a formal legal process directed at your ISP.

Static vs. Dynamic IP Addresses

Your public IP is not necessarily permanent. Whether it changes depends on how your ISP manages address allocation.

Dynamic IP addresses

Most residential broadband and mobile connections use a dynamic IP, assigned automatically via DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). The address can change when you restart your router, when the lease period expires, or when your ISP rebalances its pools. Mobile connections may change IP several times a day as you move between towers. From a privacy standpoint, dynamic IPs are slightly better — it is harder for third parties to build a persistent profile tied to a single long-term address.

Static IP addresses

A static IP never changes and is typically requested by businesses running web servers, email servers or remote-access infrastructure. A fixed address allows DNS records to reliably point to a server and makes firewall rules easier to maintain. Home users occasionally pay for a static IP when running a home server or self-hosted services accessible from outside their network. The trade-off is that a static IP is more straightforward to track across time.

IP Addresses on Mobile Devices

Mobile devices present a slightly different picture from home broadband connections. When you are connected to mobile data (4G or 5G), your IP address is assigned by your mobile carrier rather than a home ISP. Several characteristics set mobile IPs apart:

Technically yes — but only through your ISP, and only via a formal legal process. Your ISP maintains records mapping IP addresses to subscriber accounts at specific times. Law enforcement with a valid court order can request those records and identify who was using a given IP address. Does a VPN Hide Your IP Address?

Yes. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) replaces your real public IP with the IP address of the VPN server. All your traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel to the provider's server, which connects to websites on your behalf. From any destination site's perspective, the VPN server's IP is the origin of the request.

There are important limits to what a VPN does, however. The VPN provider itself can see your real IP and your traffic. If the provider logs data and receives a lawful request, they may disclose your details — which is why the provider’s logging policy matters significantly. A VPN also has no effect on tracking methods that do not rely on IP address: browser fingerprinting, persistent cookies and logged-in accounts continue to identify you regardless of which IP you connect from.

For most people, a VPN is a practical privacy tool: it prevents casual tracking, protects traffic on public Wi-Fi networks, and lets you access geo-restricted content. It is not, however, a guarantee of anonymity.
